What is the Sounds of Intent framework?

What IS the Sounds of Intent framework of musical development? The framework was the starting point for this charity. It is a theory of music psychology developed by our founder, Adam Ockelford, and others. It has been researched extensively over 25 years. And when we say extensively, we mean 35 peer-reviewed papers, 6 PhDs, 4 books, and 2 reports - and more all the time!
It is an inclusive framework for musical development, which sets out how we all engage with music over six levels, in three domains, as in the graphic above.
There are five main practical applications of the framework:
- Sets of resources targeted at particular abilities and needs
- Assessment and celebration of children and young people’s engagement with music - at all levels
- Design and delivery of projects and surveys
- Professional development for musicians and music teachers wishing to work inclusively
- Commercial music for wellbeing
The framework has benefitted many students, parents, teachers, practitioners, family members, care home users, and more - and will go on to do so for a long time!
