The Development of Sounds of Intent
Phase 1
Data were gathered by observing children with special abilities and needs engaging with music in everday settings. The research team started by investigating those with the most complex disabilities, and subsequently included others with a range of neurological and sensory differences, particularly autism and visual impairment. Findings were used inductively or ‘bottom up’, to ascertain what commonalities existed in children’s engagement with music and to determine whether certain capabilities necessarily preceded others. The first, tentative ‘Sounds of Intent’ models were sketched out.
