Self-directed Study Sheet 11
Context: ‘E’ has profound and multiple learning difficulties, and has very little voluntary movement, although it is thought that she may have some capacity to turn her head slightly. ‘E’ rarely exhibits behaviours that can be interpreted as observable responses to sound. A teacher operates a switch near her head for her, that operates the carousel of bells, touching her head at the same time.
- Observation: Think about what you see and hear in the video.
- Interpretation: What can you reasonably infer about the person's musical engagement?
- Assessment: Suggest a Sounds of Intent Level and Domain.
‘E’s head remains stationary during the excerpt, offering no evidence that she has a sense that she can act on her environment to effect change. What occurs can be classified as Level 1, Proactive (P.1): ‘makes sounds unknowingly’.
