Context: Sahra has profound and multiple learning difficulties; she has two violinists playing for her.

  1. Observation: Think about what you see and hear in the video.
  2. Interpretation: What can you reasonably infer about the person's musical engagement?

Sahra does not respond to the violinists modelling imitation on either side of her, although they watch her intently, seeking to make eye contact and responding to her head movements. This suggests that she does not have an awareness of the musical interaction taking place. Hence her level of musical engagement in this excerpt can reasonably be classified as Level 1, Interactive (I.1): ‘relates unwittingly through sound’.
